Movement

This image shows how you move through the space and how you interact with it.

There are many entrances but not that many exits. I will do a full plan drawing of what its going to look like. I really wnat to acheive my concept, it doesn't have anything to do with outer space, just a more futuristic technology. And the idea of a gravity pull and floating spaces and impossible in the natural world.

I really like this idea because you can interact with the space and with the other people that might be using this space.

Overview

This image give you a bit of an idea how one of the levels would look like. It would give you an impression that you are in a garden relaxing.
I will attempt to create this environment and animate a person walking through it. This will give you an idea on scale, perspective and make you feel as if you were in the zone.

Perspective

This image shows how the idea would work in realtion to perspective. Its not a small work, there are multiples of boxes and levels, almost like you can get lost in this mini world in a world.
There will be an all around perspective of this futuristic work.
If I am to persue futuristic, I have to come up with new clean cut ideas that no one has seen before, that includes inside and outside and zones.

Futuristic

These images give you a good idea as to how you move through the levels.
I got the idea from elevators, these are what we use in the world to get from one level to another. But I want to stretch the imagination a bit. The thing about moving from one level to another is whats exciting about it, what are you going to experience next.
This work will probably have many entrances and exits, so you get to choose which level you begin with.

Concept

I like the idea of being able to move through space like a gravity pull, and I also like the idea of floating buildings. This way you can see all and move through much easier.
Therefore I've made my concept "Future" or "Futuristic."
Different levels will have different aspects of a world and zones that all relate, you can see from one level to another.
This mind map gives a clear idea to different things that relate to the future. What comes to mind when you think of future. Something you have no reach off, but something you like to play with.

Unbelievable Altitudes

This image doesn't really have and entrance or exit. You can't really see where you are supposed to enter, you have to climb up on it to get to the stairs. And there aren't any zones. This is more like a work of art.
This work is more to an impossible level, there anren't any zones and its just an outside work, but the stairs can apply to an inside work as well.
But I like the idea of it being impossible, it gives you the idea of a rollercoaster. You can only use these stairs to a certain point.

Levels

This one applies to the same qualities as the ski park one. Impossible levels but seen from a world view, and more than one zone.
This image has an entrance and an exit which is the same. Although you can use the diving board to exit as well. The entrance is below where the bicycle is. The image has 2 zones, one above and one below, you can see the top zone from below and the zone below from above. But to get to the zone above is a bit tricky.

Ski Park

This image also has the entrance and the exit at the same place at the front where the people are walking in. This also has 2 zones, one above where the people are skiing and onw below where the tables are. This image at least shows you how you can get from the one zone to the other, be means of the stairs.

I like this work, this is more from a world view, more perspective, you can see everything. You are free to move around and get all views.

It looks like its all in one altitude but it isn't really. The mountains lookd 3 dimensional but they aren't.

This has more than one zone, above and below, also inside and outside.

New Pathway

Another work by M.C.Escher.
I like how this work is created from water to a pathway that people are creating. This work could be about inside and outside, to a certain extent.
It is a bigger scale and I like how its like its being formed by people, it's an interactive work.
I will attempt to create an idea that can also be interactive.
With this image its very open so you could enter from both ends and leave at both ends.
There are 2 zones one above that looks like water and below where the people actually have created the images.

Cycling Above

Works by M.C. Escher
This work is very interesting because its all about perspective. The pathway works in the distance forward and then they become trees, and it looks like the boys are riding on the pathway, but the pathway is actually below.
This work is also only about the outside, but if you created an inside environment below, it would be more to the brief.
A world.
With this image the entrance and exit is front the back where the house is in the distance, if you what to enter the zone below you have to enter from the front where the cyclist is heading to.
There are 2 zones, above where the 2 cyclists are and below.

Impossible Connections

In- sight window for Ars et Mathesis friends (Uit- en Inzichtraam voor Ars et Mathesisvrienden) - Jos de Mey, 1994
Here's the little man from Eschers "Belvedere" again, sitting on the edge of a, let's say, special window.
This work by Jos is very similar to the other ideas that I've posted, I really like this one because its like your outside looking in, where as the other works were inside looking out.
This window shape is naturally impossible, but it looks like it works.
This work is more about the impossible, but the entrance and exit can only be from the front of the window, although it looks a bit difficult. No Zones

Missing Sea

In Search of Sea - Rob Gonsalves
A very nice transition from Rob Gonsalves. The image starts on the left with a ship floating in a wavy ocean, the sails down. Further to the right the wind starts to set and the ship start sailing, apparently also transforming. On the right, the transformation is complete. The baffled spectator sees a seventeenth-century galleon sailing above his path in the middle of the desert.
"This work by Rob is quite intricate." I like the idea of ships sailing in one instance and then the next the one is left in the air above the hills. Its as if the sea changes to doves and the sky is blue to make it look like the ocean.
This work is also not an Impossible World as it is just an outside work, there is no inside. But the idea of ship working from possible to impossible is a good idea. Exit would be the same.
The zone below you could enter from below where the man is, and exit at the far end. And vice versa.
This work also has 2 zones, the top one you would enter from the far end of the sea, where the ship is in the distance.

Chess

Impossible Chess Set (Das gekrmmte Schachbrett) - Sandro Del-Prete, 1975
Are you looking up this chess set or down on it ?
This work by Sandro is also very good. It does apply to impossible world, one side looks like its on a table inside and the other looks real like its outside.
Its kind of looks upside down in one part.
This work doesn't appear to be very big, scale being crucial for this assignment. It feels more like an object instead of a world work.
Another image with 2 zones, the ladders tell you how you can get from one zone to another. The entrance in the zone below would be from the bottom and the entrance above would be by the castle - exit the same.

Night but Day

The Empire of Lights (L' Empire des Lumières) - Rene Magritte, 1954

Under a bright, sunny sky, the earth is covered under the night.

I also really like this work by Rene, this would included inside and outside. So it would be successful as an impossible world.
It is a much larger space, than just an object.
An inclination of this work would work well as a final piece, I will attempt to use this idea as well.

At first when you look at the picture, nothing really comes to you, you just think it looks good. Until you notice blue skys and a dark day, how does that go together.

This work has 2 zones, one below where it is night and one above where is is day.
Entrance below would be either from the left or the right.
Entrance for above would be the same. There is no direct link to show how to get from one aone to another.

Between

The woman and the horse are partially invisible because of the trees. But you can see the wrong parts.

The Blank Check (Le Blanc-seing) - Rene Magritte, 1965

I really like this idea. This is very different to Jos De Meys work. Where he's work is all about the manipulating the building. This work is about manipulating the form.
The normal would be the horse walking behind the trees, not being seen on the tree itself.
This work is only seen as outside. So this wouldn't be included as a world. Maybe if the trees where inside a building.

This work is more about the Impossible idea. The zones could be one from the real life and one from the image on the tree. How to get from the one to another is impossible. Any direction could be the entrance and exit.

www.planetperplex.com/en/impossible_images.html

The upper side of the wall is on one straight line, but the three pillars it's standing on are one three different planes. There's even enough room for seating. The man on the right originates from Eschers "Belvedere", the buy in the back looks familiar from a painting by Magritte.
Created by : Jos de Mey
I also like this work too, it also has that inside outside appeal to it. Jos de Mey went to some extent to try and create the pillars matching, he also thought about personal seating as well.
Not only are the pillars impossible the man is also holding an impossible cube.
This work is also about the impossible, the impossible pillar alignment. The 2 zones could be from the inside and the other the outside. Entracne inside could be from the left or below, and the same for exits. No visibale connection on how to get from inside to outside.

Impossible World

www.planetperplex.com/en/impossible_images.html

I like this work by Jos de Mey, 1991. Looking at the left and right of the back wall you 'd expect the tree to be behind the wall ... But the wall is behind the tree.
I find this work applies well to the brief. As the World is related to Inside and Outside. This is kind of like outside inside and then theres still an outside.

I want to use a similar idea to this one, but I will probably mix it up a bit.
This image is the same as the pervious one, also 2 zones, but the front one is more dominant, cause you don't see much of the other one. The entrance and exit can be from the front of the image.

Invariance

Multistability

Reification

Time in Space

Here you can see the formation of the person in the hand. Therefore you get "Multistability" you see one or the other. The hand or the person in time and Space. The movement of the clocks forms different views of the hand. Towards the end the image of the person begins to look like a frog instead.

Hand In-Time

This was my final video. That I wanted to display "Multistability."
I wanted to use a saying called " A persons hand in time." And I think I pulled it off. I use the clocks to create the hand formation. Then I projected light onto a surface to display the hand in time. In that instance that just creates one image. The final image is a person in the hand. Thus displaying a Persons hand in time. Not particularly in that order.

Multistabilty Idea

In my design for the formation of the clocks I was going to try and create a shadow outline of this image that I drew. This turned out to be harder that it looked. Its a image of a candle holder with faces inbetween. I found that this formed a great sense of Multistability.
I wasn't successful in creating this image, but I included it an attempt. I need to work on means of creating this image.

Altered Clock

As you see in this first image they are normal looking Winged Clocks. But as you start to alter the size, proportion ext. You are still able to make out what its orignal form was.
I decided that the shadow formation didn't work for this idea.

Shadows

This image shows the Invariance in the shadow. But with the change of the middle image, in the shadow the form actually looks like a "Butterfly." In that sense it doesn't always look the same no matter what you do to it. This way it is better to use that actual object instead.

Shadow formation

When I started this idea I worked on 3 different videos, each one creating a different required aspect.
This one is "Invariance." This is just a shadow shot of 3 of the clocks in order to display that even in shadow you know what this object is. I started off by showing the invariance in the shadows by changing the size or proportion. Then I changed it and showed the actual clock itself as Invariance.

Plane Interesting

In the creation of this surprise I used cameras and lighting to create the different views and shadows.

The thing I like about this idea is movement creates depth and the movement of these clocks give the illusion of moving birds or planes in the background. I also created these clock to animate, the wings actually move back and forward.

Time Flies

This is the beginning phase of the "Reification" Image of a Plane in the sky. I formed an Airoplane because its a movement in depth that happens in Time and Spce.
These Clocks are animated to form a shadow of a plane. The Idiom creates the illusion.
Quite a juxtaposition.

Very distant in Time and Space - Movement

This is the beginning stage of the assignement, its all about the idiom "Time Flies."

I find that the best thing that discribes "Depth" is movement in space and time.

To a great depth - these are all types of related concepts to depth.

To explain my concept better than just Depth, to explain it better in a few words would be "Very Distant in Space and Time."

The images I created to display this where forms of Movement, one a plane and then a hand and a person. The hand and person where more about a saying "A persons hand in time."

The works are created by these flying clocks. Hence time flies, a plane suits well as you get to your destination much quicker than you expect with a place. Hence Time flies.

Depth - In Distant Time and Space

When I went into depth of researching my concept "Depth" I formed a mind map of words that relate to that particular word. When I looked up multipule meanings to this word I came across - "Very distant in Time and Space." In so doing I decided to create works based on Idoims that relate to that phrase.
I idiom I choose was "Time Flies." In this instant I began to create small clocks with wings and animated them.
From this I had to form one of the related topics. This picture on the left forms an image of a "plane." Relating to speed in time and space. This topic form "Reification." The image is a generated one from the internet, nothing was altered to this image. The movement of the clocks also gives you the illusion of birds. Movement in time and space. Birds on a lake. This could be a form of "Emergence."

Experimentation

This is an overall view of what the work would look like and how it's created. I will attempt to make forms in this branching manner to show all 4 requirements, reification, invariance, emergence and multistabiliy.
The Juxtapostions of these 2 would be day and night.
This experiments just displays 2 forms of these.

In the concept of depth I have displayed quite a few.
- Dark
- Deep
- Black
- Darkness

- Increase and decrease
- Length
- Illusion
- Deception

This is just a side view shot to show you the structure and how the light creates the form. If you walk through a tunnel like the one I've displayed in my Active Experimentation previously and you see works like this in multiple dimension would it still have the same effect?

Branching

With this multiple form of branching you get a formation of images, this is just like the work of another man who created a formation of forks bent in a certain way to form a motorbike.

These works are created with the depths of the in betweens of the structure.

Image Formation

These are forms of works which are created from a multiple of branches.
This image displays Reification and the one below displays Emergence.
This form of work is created through the idea of tunneling. Where branching is an example of depth, this shows my concept .

This work that is displayed on the left from the same branching creation, doesn't really form anything in this angle, so you start to wonder where the Emergence is.
These works can only be displayed with direct light from both directions.
When the angle of this work is altered you can see the formed image.
Here on the left you can see it forms a piece of land with a tree and Sun. (Emergence)
I will attempt to create something more detailed, but with the images
displayed in black you can get a better sense of depth.

An example to Reification

With this Active Experimentation I started to play with materials, not a normal material but I played with something that could be manipulated. I used salt. With this I was able to create forms.

With this experimentation I started to think about how to display depth.
When you use lighter colours in front and darker colours toward the back you create a forms of depth.
- Size

- Materials
I find that the salt had a great affect on creating this idea.
