Depth

These are views from within the tunneling and upon entering, as you reach further down the insiding may change in size or colour. As you get in further it could also get darker. Dark - being an aspect of Depth. From the mind map, also it keeps increasing. Another aspect of Depth.
As you can see it is quite bright at the entrance and then working your way further back more darker.

Depth - Branching

These are 3d design ideas on how this branching idea will work. It wouldn't be as big as a corridor, but big enough for a normal sized person.
See here how at the entrance it eventually splits in different directions. (i.e Branching out)
This just gives you a quick idea into how this would take place. Lighting is also very essentail for this to work.
Not very sure on the colour at the moment as this will change due to the required aspects that will take place inside the tubular space.

Concept into Action

Creation of the Cube:
With the depth created cube, I began to place an image on the face to demonstrate my idea. This is an image of Emergence for example. This image can be found on the link below.
This could demonstrate that the areas with the depth could create a different aspect, like the image on the facade can display emergence, but the indented part can display invariance for example. Or maybe they will both be Emergence. How it will work is that each side will contain an image that is juxtaposed to the other. But still trying to contain all the aspect requirements.

Image Deception

Here I've done the same thing. I've placed another image on the Face this time it has a different aspect, the Reification aspect. Were there is Solid and Void. With the depth areas the image will fall further back but still visible, from another side it will look like something else.

Experiments

This is just a small creation of this idea, I just cut depths into this box to try and create and image for you.

This illusion might also only work with lighting and deception.
But maybe I can create it without those forms of manipulation.
I will attempt to create further.

New Mind Map Concept

This was my final concept Idea. I finally went with words that discribe Depth better and that is "Very distant in Space and Time."

Image Concept

This work by Peter Ireland(in the link above) is a good example to what can be displayed in the depth areas. You don't see everything on the surface until its been revealed below, like these rocks. This could be a form of Emergence, but then you don't have to find anything its already been revealed. The work on the right is more Emergence, and I feel this applies more to my work (on Emergence in Reflective Observation) that the one of Peter's in terms of aspects. But I like the idea of revealing the hidden secret, thats what this work on the left looks like. I find it successful in terms of a painted illusion.

For this work:

Materials: Cardboard or wood, marble cubes (multi-coloured.)

This drawing on the left is about my ideas on how to go about shwoing Depth. I want to escape the cube and branch out. My the work can be alternate or have movement therefore being wider in experiementation.

Compiling Images - Mind Map

This concept of depth deception can also be created by small compiles of blocks making up images. For the depth areas this could create more than one form of manipulation. You can find this work by the link below. With the compiling of images you have to bring these mind map aspects in to play, as they can open many doors to experiementation. They show how I can widen my ideas on depth. With this compiling of colours you inevitably make up an image, like the clown image. I want to end up doing something very similar.

This clown (in link above) work that I chose as Reflective Observation for Invariance I find quite successful when I talk about the compiling of blocks to make and image. This clown is made up of many small coloured blocks, just its more clearer than the blocks above.

You always want to show how you get back to main subject (i.e the clown).

Even if you move further out of the picture you can still tell that its a clown, we know this by the decortive works on the face.

I wanna maybe use something similar, maybe not such a decorative symbol.

Concept

The concept for Juxtapositions:

I want to create a cube that can display all aspects for this assignment.
My Concept is again depth deception and telling the deference between foreground and background.

I want to display Reification, Invariance and Emergence. I will attempt to create this first in materials and photograph it, to see if it will work physically.
These sketches show how I want my idea to expand from the cube idea.
When you think of using a space that is wide with ideas you can make it an illusion to look like there is multiple spaces. Branching out from corridors.

Concept - Multi Depths

With the idea of branching out I made a quick sketch to show how it could realte to Depth, what they have in commaom.
Depth - Increase - Beond - Paths - Control. Its the same in Branching.
If I was to create these aspects in a corridor that branches out I could come up with mant different ideas, especially of you discover the work as an individual.

Concept

This is a run through of how the layout would work. Highlighted in red shows importance to understanding how each aspect would be displayed.

Depending on the outcome, the cube will probably not look like a cube once altered to suit all created sides.

This work that I researched in Reflective Observation is one of the examples that I will undergo for Invariance on one of the sides of the cube. I might try and display this in more than one way, but I will try and at least one way.
I find this work successful in a sense, but I wanna try and use something more detailed, this is very simple.

Branching

Depth - Branching

This is a drawing that talks about my idea to branch out. Instead of a cube I've moved away from that to an idea that revolves around branching out. Just like walking down a corridor that keeps going in multiple directions, this is how you can experience my work. It changes due to the direction you walk in.

Shape - Tubular like

Colour - Multi (Depending on the designs)

Materials - Soft Cushion

Perspective - Multi viewed (Works could be above and below as well.)

Emergence (Camouflage)

From basic shapes or natural things emerges something completely different, this would not only be a hidden images but reification as well.

Can you see the faces in the forest.

I find this work very successful, I don't really find anything that doesn't work with the painting. The hours it must have taken to calculate how you work the faces into the background and make it look not so obvious.

Emergence

del.icio.us/codes02

Can you see all the forms in the background. The fcae, the gorilla on the left and the gorilla in the backgound. The bird type peninsula.

Invariance (Transformation)

If I create a 3D form you would what to see multiple images. But what if there was a complete transformation. When twisting the object it forms different images. No matter how you manipulate the object you still see the same object. Now this is the successful point to this work above.
The unsuccessful approach to it, is that its only in black and white, will it still be the same if you add colour or shadows. I know a cube always looks the same from all sides, but what if you didn't use a cube. What if it was a different shape that didn't look the same from all sides?

Invariance (Transformation

I multi of clowns in different forms but they all bring you back to the same thing. I think this is very successfull, but not a trick of the mind or a surprise or anything.

Invariance

I find both if these very simple but successfull in always bringing you back to the original shape or form.

Reification (Explicit and Implicit)

More forms creating things. Maybe levels of 3d can create these forms as well.
The work below is also part of this research. As my opinion to this work, I find it quite successful in terms of 3 dimensional. But in another sense its not as successful like the other Gestalt works, where the white is the dominant background and the rest of the works are black, it's like when you use white as a background it leaves more for your imagination.

Reification

Can you see Queen Victoria in between the branches?
Unlock the hidden potentail.

Reification (Explicit and Implicit)

I want to try and add blank spaces that create shapes and forms. These inkbolt tests would have to be specaily created in order to form all of these requirements. I will maybe have to create models of some sort.

Multistability (Alternatives)

Creating images from outlines. But there are 2 images. I want to create something similar but with a mixtures of Emergence as well.
I find this work quite successful in creating multiple images with black and white, but would it still create the same effect with colour. Its deffinatly a 2d image. What if you created something like this in a 3d image. Would you still see both forms? Something I would probably have to experiment.

Multistability

: sketching.wordpress.com/tag/finished-works/

Clearly from above you can see a human form face. From further away you can see a parrots beck.

The human face is deffinately more noticeable but there is another form there.

Multistability

I like this one do you see a man or horse. You just have to rotate them in order to see the full man and horse.

Others

With this form of work by Gestalt theory, it is difficult to distinguish which is the front and which is the back. Reification can be similar to to which is solid and void.
I like this idea as I can maybe use it when creating the depth parts.

Final Illsuion

Mind Trick

3D Deception

These are the final Concrete Experience images from the clip. This was created all form one length of blocks just with manipulated lighting. It shows Wording from the front and then different wording from the back. The blocks where just altered from the front and the back, but with the help of the lighting it looks like there are no changes. If this where in a different surrounding the function would be altered to meet its atmosphere, but still has the same outcome when an individual appoaches.

Steps of Creation

When creating this Depth Deception work, I had ot think about forming it without giving away the final result.
The text was created by long precession of blocks. The longer they get the more deceiving they become. So if they are extremely long you can't see the end. With this in mind I just "Editable meshed" the blocks and altered the ends to create different wording.
The the manipulation of the lighting from front and back, you cannot see the inbetween section therefore it looks like an illusion was created.
These views created in 3D Max give you an overall idea on how I made this happen.

Final (Mind Trick)

This final Concrete work of mine is best revealled as a 3d Video Work as shown above. This piece of work on "Surprise" is all about manipulation of light work. This work was inspired bu Michael Bach and many others.

2 Faces

Positive and negative versions of the mask only differ in the position of the assumed light source, and a face is such a strong percept that it overcomes the “history” which is the only cue that the face is negative.
These are words from Roger Garrett.
This work inspired my idea and the designer of this work is Michael Bach.

Final Preparation Sketches

Light Manipulation

Materials: Soft wood (reflective.)
Bright Light in Certains areas, pattern print on wood. Busy and distracting.

Form and Perspective: is only from front and back, and perspective and light is what creates the illusion.

Function: That the wording in the front is different from the wording at the back. The illusion will only work if installed in a dark corner or room with light work. Movement of the individual is required in order for the installation to work.

Illusionally Patterns: One constant pattern from front to back, just reformed to suit wording.

Conceptual

While creating the final product. I had to ensure my concept remained the same throughout the whole processess. When looking up the word depth, you usually find its a little different from what you might have imagined.

Depth (DISTANCE DOWN) noun [C or U] the distance down either from the top of something to the bottom, or to a distance below the top surface of something.

With this explaination you see that this assignment cannot only be from one perspective. Like this image above, it can only speak about one point perspective. The image below shows more about Depth. Therefore the video clip shows more about depth then just 2d images of my idea.
This also shows how my concept fits in with the design process and step by step creation.
concept: noun [C]a principle or idea
As above with the explaintion to concept, my concept is kind of the key to how the illusion works.

Camera View

In order to create a standing Concept, the playing of cameras was crutial.

As seen in the image on the left. The work was in the middle and the camera in a distance and the lighting above from both sides.

The lights had to be placed in such a way that they did not give off to much information. The less information you give the more the illusion will work.

When rendered with no lighting alot of changes done to the blocks was seen. Therefore the Light deception was created

Illusional Blocks

What is the Concept of my work.

My work is about formation and a trick of the mind. Our mind usually makes up things from what it sees before and after, skipping the in between. Now these are a formation of random blocks, but when thrown together make a formation of words created by shadows.

My concept therefore is called Illusional Shadows. Formed by depth.
Now this is not only first perspective surprise but from all sides, by formation of shadows.
Materials used to create - would be a soft formof wood, like balsa. Easy for carving.

I want to also create and image of something that's created by words on the facade of the blocks.

Materials for this would be an imprint of some kind.

Form and Perspective - As perviously noted. The perspective will be from front, and sides, therefore 3 views. Form is shaped by carving, size about 40x40cm

Function: With movement furthur away from blocks you are able to make out the words. To surprise you from more than one perspective. No actual movement of the work is required.

Illusionary Patterns: I'm not quite sure if there are many but from first glance it seems there is just one pattern formed. And in time 1 from the side.

In process I will attempt to actually build an actual model design.

Mind Trick

This is the final view where you can see the outcome. The wording" You are seeing things."
This is the first stage of the final part.

Illusional Perspective

When experiementing with the camera views in order to create the illusion it had to be exact. I didn't want to much detail showing when roaming around from one side to the other. When it comes to my concept "Depth Deception" I had to make sure it stood right when video'd.
The thin line created shows that its all from one line of blocks. There's nothing added at the end to create these words. For example and extra row of blocks to create the wording.
This shot is from the "Free camera" coming around toward the final part of the video.

Field View

When looking at the above shot of the video clip, you can see what exactly the lighting cuts out. There are small parts that are revealed with-in where the changes where made to create the wording.
This is just to give you more than one-perspective view of the final work.

A Play on Words

These just look like random shapes.

My idea is that I wanted to create a surprise of Words, a play on words. These are not just random shapes, they form words, if you move furthur away you can accomplish this.

Now this is just a one sided perspective. What I want to purpose is from 3 sides, from the front you get the text and from the side it creates an image outline. Now materials used would probably be cardboard or paper of some sort something that is easy to manipulate. I would keep strick colours to create a fuller effect otherwise I don't think it would work. As above in the blue, I'm sure it would work better in Black and White. I will try and design this idea in 3D Max. Below I have included an image zoomed out to show you how you can see the words.

3D Depth Perception

As you can see the furthur you move away the more you can make up the words, from close up they just look like random shapes.
The concept I'm thinking of at the moment is about Depth perception. With depth you can create a manipulated form, you can create a 3D Illusional form.
